Sam and Tim's difference's (Comparitive Essay)

My comparative essay is on Tim and Sam from the book “My Brother Sam is dead” by Christopher collier and James collier. It is about a boy’s brother joining the army and wanting to grow up like him by being brave and outgoing. He doesn’t know what unexpected things could happen to his brother though.

Sam from the book "My brother Sam is dead” is a brave boy that joins the war. Sam's dad doesn't want him going to war because he's afraid of him dyeing. Even though he's afraid he doesn't show it; he just yells at Sam. Sam gets in fights with him a lot because of the war. As you read this book you will see that Sam is a brave and strong willed boy.

Tim from the same book is and outgoing young boy that wants to be like his brother Sam. Once you read the book you will notice that there are quite a few differences. Tim is never mean to their dad but sometimes he lies to him because he wants to go on adventures by doing new things. The one time he lied in the book was when he told his dad he wanted to go fishing with Mr. Heron but really he was going to deliver a message for him. Tim felt really bad about lying because it was a sin and if his dad found out he would be really mad.

You can trust Tim more than you can trust Sam because he is more respectful to people and can keep from opening or wanting to know something more than Sam. When Tim was delivering the letter, Betsy Sam’s girlfriend came up and was questioning him about what was in the envelope.  Tim wouldn’t open the envelope even thought Betsy was making up all this stuff that could be in it. If it was Sam he would have most likely opened it because Betsy would have told him to.

Later on down the road Betsy jumped on him and grabbed for the envelope that was in his shirt pocket. She had him pinned to the ground while he was kicking and swinging his arms all over trying to break free. After a few minutes of wrestling Betsy grabbed the envelope and ran toward town while ripping the envelope off. Tim got up and chased after her as fast as he could until she threw it back over her shoulder and let it float to the ground like a leaf in gentle autumn breeze. Since it was out of the envelope he decided to just pick it up and read it. It said “If this message is received he shall be our messenger.

His dad had to have a lot of trust in him to let him come deliver the cattle. Tim also worries about his dad more than Sam because Life there father is against everything that he wants to do. When Tim went with his dad to deliver that cattle to the butcher some cattle thieves came and surrounded them and their cattle. One of them rode up to Life and talked to him about giving them some cattle but Life wouldn’t no matter what so the cattle thieve pistol whipped him in the head. Life fell to the ground and Tim yelled for them to stop. They told Tim to get out of the wagon and go in the field. He thought of running to town and getting help but the cattle thieves would have caught up and trampled him down. Sam used to deliver cattle with him but since he went off to war he hasn’t been able to.

I chose two characters from the same book because it seemed like they had a lot of differences between each other. They also seemed very interesting in the story.
